Thank you! 🙏 Béla Bartók (1881 to 1945) was a Hungarian composer, pianist and ethnomusicologist, and one of the most original voices in the music of the 20th century. A child prodigy taught by his mother, he studied at the Budapest Academy and became a star pianist, but gradually turned toward composition and folk music research. Together with Zoltán Kodály, Bartók traveled with an early phonograph to remote villages, recording thousands of Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak and Turkish folk songs. He saw this not as local colour but as a scientific mission, convinced that authentic peasant music held a deeper logic that could renew art music. This shaped his style, from modal scales and irregular rhythms to biting dissonances and a percussive piano technique. Shy and fiercely principled, Bartók refused the fascist regime in Hungary and emigrated to the United States in 1940, where he died in 1945.
