This Indonesian hip-hop recording features a work composed in 1912, Arnold Schoenberg's *Pierrot Lunaire*, Op. 21. The compact yet revolutionary cycle of 21 melodramas for voice employs the technique known as Sprechstimme, with a small chamber ensemble of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion in some sections. The work draws from 21 surreal, often grotesque poems by Albert Giraud, translated into German by Otto Erich Hartleben. Schoenberg departs from traditional tonal centers, instead utilizing atonal motives, terse, recurring pitch cells, and rhythmic gestures to unify the miniatures. The pieces navigate between sardonic, nightmarish moods and moments of fragile lyricism, with jagged textures and sudden instrumental interjections heightening irony and shock, while sustained passages, built on plaintive lines and sparse accompaniment, evoke melancholy and intimacy.
