Written for mixed chorus and orchestra but deliberately without soloists, it unfolds in seven compact yet powerful movements, from the hushed and austere Introitus et Kyrie to a searing Dies Irae, whose orchestral fanfares and tam tam crash heighten images of judgment and terror, closing with a tender Pie Jesu and a resigned Agnus Dei. Cherubini's scoring is calculated for dramatic effect, often omitting violins in the opening movements to create a veiled, somber color, then deploying full winds, brass, timpani, and tam tam for the Dies Irae's apocalyptic force. Eschewing operatic display, he makes the chorus the sole protagonist, giving the work a concentrated, almost architectural grandeur.
