About this Song
The global category of world music emerged to center creative sonic works that draw from specific regional cultural roots, moving beyond the narrow dominance of pop, rock, and other mainstream Western formats that have long controlled most global commercial and critical music discourse. This framing has allowed creators from across the Global South to share their work with audiences far outside their home communities, while retaining the core cultural ties that give their work its meaning and resonance. Indonesia, a nation made up of thousands of distinct islands spread across a vast stretch of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, has contributed a rich and varied body of work to the world music canon, with each of its many distinct cultural groups bringing their own unique approaches to sonic creation, all of which have found audiences around the world.
