Indonesian pop and Malay pop, two interconnected strains that have shaped mainstream Indonesian music for decades, center narrative depth as much as melodic craft, a tradition Ifan Seventeen has spent his career expanding and honoring. Born Riefian Fajarsyah in Yogyakarta on March 16, 1983, Ifan grew up in Jakarta, building a relationship with music that would lead him to audition for one of the country’s most prominent bands, Seventeen, in 2008. That audition led to him joining the group as its new vocalist, replacing the prior frontman and stepping into a role that would define his public and creative life, as Seventeen was already a well-established name in the Indonesian music industry when he came on board.
