This framework provides a home for work that emerges from contexts with rich, multifaceted creative lineages, and few regions contribute as much depth and diversity to global world music collections as Indonesia. Spanning an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia is home to hundreds of distinct ethnic and cultural groups, each with its own longstanding artistic practices, modes of creative storytelling, and approaches to sound that have evolved over centuries of intercommunity connection, cross-cultural exchange, and internal cultural growth.
