About this Song
World music as a genre draws its power from centering cultural sonic traditions that might otherwise remain sidelined in global mainstream music conversations, creating space for works rooted in specific regional identities to reach audiences eager to engage with creative expression beyond the narrow bounds of Western commercial pop, rock, and classical canons that have long dominated global music ecosystems. The framework of world music was developed to honor the depth and complexity of creative work from communities across the Global South and Indigenous nations, framing these works not as novelties or secondary curiosities, but as vital, sophisticated contributions to the global landscape of sound.
