Indonesia’s rich, cross-pollinating music scene, which has long blended global genres with centuries-old local artistic traditions, gave rise to the Yogyakarta-based hip-hop project NDX A.K.A. when the group formed in 2011. A duo consisting of Yonanda Frisna Damara and Fajar Ari, who records under the alias PJR Microphone, NDX A.K.A. built its entire creative identity around radical cross-genre fusion, a mission baked into its name from the start. The group’s moniker pulls its first set of initials from Yonanda, shortened to ND, with “A.K.A.” standing for “As Known As” to signal the project’s shape-shifting, alias-driven approach, which was designed to embody an extreme fusion of hip-hop and other styles that push past standard genre boundaries.
