About this Song
Artists based in Indonesia draw on a vast, interconnected network of cultural traditions that stretch across the nation’s more than 17,000 islands, each community carrying its own distinct set of artistic practices, communal values, and creative lineages that shape every work they produce. These artists build on generations of knowledge that has been cultivated and shared within their home communities, preserving core elements of their cultural heritage while adapting their practice to fit within evolving creative landscapes, both across Indonesia’s diverse internal regions and around the world. Many of these creators contribute to the global category of world music, a space that centers regionally specific cultural expression that would otherwise be overlooked by mainstream creative frameworks, elevating work that carries unique, place-based identity that cannot be replicated by generic or homogenized creative output.
