Justin Bieber, a Canadian pop singer, gained fame as a teenager through YouTube, where he showcased his self-taught musical talents. Born on March 1, 1994, in London, Ontario, Bieber was raised primarily by his mother, Pattie Mallette. At the age of 12, Bieber placed second in a local singing competition in Stratford, performing Ne-Yo's "So Sick." His mother began posting his performances on YouTube, which led to his discovery by talent manager Scooter Braun in 2008. Braun flew Bieber to Atlanta, Georgia, where he met with singer and producer Usher, and soon after, Bieber was signed to Island Records. Bieber's debut EP, *My World*, released in 2009, received positive reviews and debuted at number one in Canada and reached the top 5 in the United Kingdom and the United States. *My World* made Bieber the only solo artist in Billboard history to have four singles from a debut album chart in the Top 40 of the Hot 100 before the album's release.
