One Direction, an English-Irish pop boy band, formed in London in 2010. The group originated on the British singing competition show *The X Factor* in 2010. The original members were Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson. Each member initially auditioned as a solo artist for *The X Factor* but was later grouped to form the band. Guest judge Nicole Scherzinger and long-time judge Simon Cowell both claimed to have conceived the idea of forming the band. Unseen footage from *The X Factor* in 2022 confirmed Scherzinger's significant role in forming the band. Horan was chosen first, followed by Styles, Tomlinson, Payne, and Malik. Harry Styles created the band's name, One Direction, often abbreviated to 1D. One Direction finished third in the seventh series of *The X Factor* in 2010. After their appearance on *The X Factor*, Simon Cowell signed One Direction to a reported £2 million record deal with Syco Records. One Direction signed with Columbia Records in North America.
