One Direction is an English-Irish pop boy band. The group formed in London in 2010. Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson were the original members. Each member initially auditioned as a solo artist for *The X Factor* in 2010. They were grouped together to form the band on the British singing competition show. Guest judge Nicole Scherzinger and long-time judge Simon Cowell both claimed to have conceived the idea. Unseen footage from *The X Factor* in 2022 confirmed Scherzinger's significant role. Horan was chosen first, followed by Styles, Tomlinson, Payne, and Malik. Harry Styles named the band One Direction, often abbreviated to 1D. One Direction finished third in the seventh series of *The X Factor* in 2010. Simon Cowell signed One Direction to a reported £2 million record deal with Syco Records after their appearance on the show. One Direction signed with Columbia Records in North America.
