From remote eastern provinces to the central island of Java, home to Yogyakarta, one of Southeast Asia’s most vibrant creative hubs, these artists redefine Indonesian popular music by merging hip hop, dangdut, and a host of other indigenous and modern forms into entirely new sonic identities. Among these artists is Jacson Zeran, a rapper whose career traces the same cross-regional path that defines so much of his most successful work. Hailing from Fakfak, Papua, on the far eastern edge of Indonesia, Zeran built his career after moving to Yogyakarta, where he connected with a network of fellow musicians to expand his reach and refine his signature sound.
