For Indonesian artists, that gap between cataloguing limitations and creative reality is particularly pronounced, as the archipelago is home to thousands of distinct regional musical traditions, spanning intergenerational folk practices, ceremonial soundscapes, and cross-pollinated contemporary styles that draw from both local cultural roots and global creative influences, resulting in work that defies any attempt to force it into a preexisting pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, or classical box.
