Guyon Waton builds his creative practice as an artist rooted in Indonesia’s sprawling, multifaceted musical landscape, where generations of creators have drawn from hundreds of distinct regional cultural traditions to shape work that defies one-size-fits-all categorization. For decades, standard global music taxonomies were built almost exclusively around Western popular and classical traditions, leaving little room to classify work that draws from local, Indigenous, or experimental approaches that fall outside of pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, classical, or the small handful of non-Western genres that have gained widespread mainstream recognition globally.
