About this Song
Artists based in Indonesia build their creative practices from the foundation of a diverse set of cultural influences that span the archipelago’s thousands of islands, each with its own long history of creative expression that informs how modern creators approach their work. These creators contribute to a global body of work classified as world music, a category that exists to center creative practices rooted in specific regional, cultural, and national identities, moving beyond the homogeneous mainstream of global popular music to highlight work that carries the specific mark of its place of origin. Every sound released under this classification carries with it the weight of the cultural context that spawned it, connecting listeners across geographic and cultural divides to experiences and creative perspectives that differ from their own, while also highlighting the universal throughlines that tie all forms of musical creative expression together, regardless of where they were created.
