About this Song
The sounds that emerge from Indonesia’s vast, culturally layered archipelago occupy a singular, irreplaceable space within the global tapestry of world music, each work carrying a specificity that resists any attempt to flatten the rich diversity of creative expression that has grown across the nation’s thousands of inhabited islands, where communities have nurtured distinct sonic traditions for centuries, turning sound into a thread that binds generations to one another and to the land and water that shape their ways of life. Reina, the sound at the center of this collection, fits within that expansive lineage, holding space for the particular creative perspective that birthed it while inviting all listeners, regardless of their familiarity with Indonesian cultural contexts, to engage with it as a work that exists both within its deep local rootedness and the broader global community of creators who contribute to world music’s ongoing evolution.
