Seventeen, an Indonesian pop rock band active from 1999 to 2018, formed in Yogyakarta in 1999 with schoolmates Yudhi Rus Harjanto, Herman Sikumbang, Zulianto "Zozo" Angga, and Windu Andi Darmawan. The band's name was chosen because all members were 17 years old at its formation, which officially occurred on January 17, 1999. Vocalists Yohan "Doni" Saputro and Riefian "Ifan" Fajarsyah, and bassist M. Awal "Bani" Purbani joined later, and their debut album, *Bintang Terpilih*, was released on July 17, 2003, through Universal Music Indonesia. The band released six studio albums and fifteen singles before a December 22, 2018, performance at a resort in Tanjung Lesung, when the Sunda Strait tsunami resulted in the deaths of almost all band members, including Bani, Herman, and Andi, along with a crew member and their manager. Riefian "Ifan" Fajarsyah, the sole surviving member, initially announced the band would not continue but later decided to carry on the name as a solo artist in honor of the deceased members.
