About this Song
World music as a categorical framework exists to center sonic works rooted in the specific, place-based cultural traditions of communities around the globe, moving beyond the boundaries of mainstream popular music to elevate creative expressions that carry the weight of intergenerational knowledge, local history, and collective identity that shapes their creation and circulation. This framing makes space for works from regions whose creative output is often overlooked in dominant global music discourse, centering geographies that hold layers of cultural diversity too vast to be captured by narrow, industry-standard genre labels that prioritize commercial appeal over cultural specificity.
