About this Song
World music as a category exists to elevate and center sonic practices that emerge from specific, often marginalized cultural contexts, providing a space where works rooted in local traditions can reach audiences who might not otherwise encounter the rich diversity of global sonic creation. Indonesia, as the origin point of this work, boasts a cultural landscape shaped by hundreds of distinct ethnic groups spread across more than 17,000 islands, each with their own unique artistic traditions, sonic languages, and creative practices that have evolved over centuries. This diversity feeds into the breadth of Indonesian works that fall under the world music umbrella, each adding a new layer of complexity and richness to the genre's global body of work.
