About this Song
The global landscape of world music is defined by its commitment to centering geographically specific cultural expressions, lifting up sounds that carry the distinct histories, traditions, and identities of the communities that create them, rather than forcing those works into the homogenized frameworks that dominate much of mainstream global music. Indonesia, an archipelago nation made up of more than 17,000 individual islands that are home to hundreds of distinct cultural groups, has long been one of the most prolific and influential contributors to the world music genre, with creators from across its islands drawing from thousands of years of local musical practice to craft works that resonate with audiences both within Indonesia and across the world.
