About this Song
Indonesia’s sprawling network of islands, each with its own distinct cultural heritage, creative lineages, and approaches to sound-making, has cultivated a rich pool of creators whose work contributes to the global landscape of world music, a category that intentionally centers creative expressions rooted in specific cultural contexts that move beyond the boundaries of mainstream global industry norms. For creators based in Indonesia, working within the sphere of world music offers a framework to honor the traditions that shape their practice while sharing their work with audiences across the world who seek out sound that carries the specificity of place, the depth of cultural inheritance, and the creative vision of artists tied to communities that have nurtured sound-making as a core part of social, spiritual, and communal life for generations.
