About This Album
The Music/Mix classification reimagines how creative collections can be framed, rejecting the narrow silos that often force regional music to fit into pre-existing, often Western-derived genre boxes that erase the nuance of the communities that make and engage with that work. For the Indonesian album Balada Shalawat, that classification is not just an arbitrary categorical label, but a framework that honors the full breadth of creative expression that emerges from the nation’s sprawling, diverse cultural landscape, allowing the collection to hold space for every strand of sonic practice that defines it without forcing those strands to conform to external expectations of what a specific genre should sound like, who it should center, or how it should be consumed.
