John Galliano has withdrawn from the Met's 2027 Costume Institute exhibition after mounting backlash over his history of antisemitic hate crimes. John Galliano and the Metropolitan Museum of Art have jointly announced that the spring 2027 exhibition "John Galliano: Horizons" will not proceed as planned. The show, announced in July, would have made Galliano only the third living designer honored by the Costume Institute, following Yves Saint Laurent and Rei Kawakubo. The announcement reignited scrutiny of Galliano's 2011 antisemitic and racist outbursts, which led to hate crime convictions in Paris. Reports indicated Met donors threatened to withdraw support and that trustees were weighing a date change for the Met Gala itself, since the traditional date falls on Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day in 2027. In a statement, Galliano said he remains "fully accountable" for the pain caused to Jewish and Asian communities and described atonement as an ongoing responsibility. Anna Wintour called his decision to step back "courageous." The Met says details on a replacement spring exhibition will come later.
