Jason Arday, who made history in 2023 as the University of Cambridge's youngest Black professor, has been found dead at his home in Battersea, London, at age 41. His death comes just over a week after he resigned from Cambridge and Jesus College amid a university investigation into plagiarism allegations, and only three days after the U.S. release of his memoir, "Great and Unfortunate Things." The Metropolitan Police say the death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious, with a file going to the coroner. In a statement, Arday's family said he had endured "a campaign of sustained abuse" for more than three years, describing him as "a gentle man." Cambridge's vice-chancellor called the news "desperately saddening." Arday's rise to Cambridge — after a childhood in which he was nonverbal until nearly 12 and didn't learn to read or write until his late teens — had drawn global attention before the plagiarism controversy began.
