After getting a full-body Prenuvo scan in February, the actress discovered a lesion on her brain that turned out to be a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare, slow-growing cancer. Just weeks before she was set to start filming her new CBS legal drama Cupertino, Philipps underwent a roughly five-hour surgery at NYU Langone to have the tumor removed. She got through it without incident, staples and all, and jumped back into work. But in April, a setback: her dermatologist spotted something wrong with her incision, leading to a diagnosis of a staph infection and a second, unplanned surgery to clear it.
