About this Song
The flexible “Other” subcategory nested within the broader global Afrobeat umbrella exists specifically to hold work that engages with the core rhythmic and structural throughlines of Afrobeat while drawing from additional, uncategorized sonic traditions that don’t fit within more established subsets of the genre, creating a space for creators outside of the form’s historic West African origins to reimagine its core tenets through their own cultural lenses. This intentional flexibility has allowed Afrobeat to grow far beyond the borders of its birthplace, turning it into a truly global creative tradition that welcomes reinterpretation rather than demanding rigid adherence to a single set of sonic rules, expanding its footprint to reach creative scenes on every inhabited continent.
