Perunggu, the Indonesian creative behind the sound Gemilang, builds work that occupies the expansive, boundary-resistant space of Music/Other, a genre classification that exists specifically to hold recorded audio that defies the narrow, often rigid categorizations that structure most mainstream engagement with music. For decades, dominant global genre frameworks have centered the musical traditions of Western creative scenes, leaving artists working outside of those contexts, especially in Southeast Asia’s rich, diverse network of creative communities, to be either boxed into oversimplified, exoticizing labels or dismissed as unmarketable if their work fails to align with pre-existing genre boxes that were never built to hold their cultural and creative perspectives. Music/Other rejects that limitation, creating a space where work like Perunggu’s can exist on its own terms, without being forced to shrink to fit a label that doesn’t capture its full creative identity.
